The Benefits of Adopting a Senior Pet

By CAA Saskatchewan

One of the most profound loves we experience as humans is the bond we share with our pets. It’s truly unconditional, as you become the only things that matter to them. Anyone who has owned a pet knows how beautiful this can be, but many people will avoid senior pets because they don’t see how wonderful they are. Let’s talk about why choosing a senior could be a great choice for your next pet!

  1. They’re already housebroken and trained. You won’t have to spend the same time that you would with a baby animal figuring out their behaviour—what you see is what you get, and you can skip right to focusing on giving them as much love as possible!
  2. Quick Learners. Since they’ve already lived a full life and likely experienced other training, they are smart and able to pick up new things quickly.
  3. Will love you deeply. Senior pets often recognize that their new owners are giving them a better life, which results in them loving you fast and hard! They will be a true companion to you.
  4. Calmer temperament and better manners. With younger pets, you deal with a lot of energy, nighttime zoomies, frequent potty breaks, and so much more. Senior pets have outgrown the hyperactivity associated with youth and know how to handle themselves, meaning less chaos in your home and more peaceful moments together.
  5. Less time and supervision required. With their training already in place, senior pets require less supervision than younger animals. You can confidently leave them alone at home without worrying because of their completed training. If you are wary of what training they have, you can ask about it! Their shelter or foster home will be able to fill you in on what they’re like.
  6. Know their medical history. When adopting a senior pet, you often have access to their complete medical history. This transparency means fewer surprises regarding health issues and vaccinations, leading to fewer vet visits compared to younger pets.
  7. Lower adoption fees. Senior pets tend to cost less initially since shelters price them lower than baby animals. You also won’t have to spend extra money to get larger beds or crates since they are already full-grown!
  8. They need your help. Sadly, senior pets are less likely to be adopted because of their age and potential health issues. By choosing to adopt one of these deserving animals, you’re not only saving a life but also providing them with the love and care they deserve in their golden years. It’s a beautiful gift to give to a special animal.

There are so many reasons why adopting a senior pet is a great choice to make. However, we recognize many people don’t make this choice because of the fear of possible health issues and the increased possibility of losing the animal sooner.

Though senior pets may face health challenges, this doesn’t have to be a barrier with the right support in place!
