The Ultimate Guide to Packing Your Car Emergency Kit

By CAA Saskatchewan

Do you keep an emergency kit in your car? Studies have shown that many people don’t. Whether it’s forgetfulness, procrastination, or simply doubting you’ll ever need it, there are many reasons you might not have one. However, there is one compelling reason why you should: it could save your life one day. Let’s walk through our advice for what you should keep in your kit and why these items are important.

For Your Body

If your car breaks down far from help, it’s important to make sure you can stay safe until someone arrives. We recommend packing these items:

  • Food: Non-perishable items like granola bars.
  • Water: Plastic bottles (avoid glass, as it can break in the cold). Replace every six months.
  • Blankets and Extra Clothes: To stay warm. This could include mitts, toques, and footwear for all passengers.
  • First Aid Kit: Include a seat belt cutter for emergencies. We recommend also including emergency flares or reflectors so you can make others aware of your location! If you want to make it easy on yourself, you can purchase a pre-made roadside kit at our CAA Stores or in our online shop.
  • Stranded: Stay in your vehicle as it provides temporary shelter until help arrives. Be sure to drive according to weather and road conditions. Learn more about driver safety on our website!

For Your Car

Your well-being comes first, but once you're taken care of, here’s what you should pack to get your car moving again as soon as possible:

  • Jumper Cables: For a boost from a fellow driver.
  • Small Tool Kit: Including pliers, a tire pressure gauge, and an adjustable wrench.
  • Flashlight: Don’t forget the extra batteries!
  • Windshield Washer Fluid: To maintain visibility.
  • Maps: To navigate if cell service isn’t available.
  • Mobile Phone and Charger: You don’t want to be stuck without power! Consider a battery-operated charging pack so you always have an extra power source.

For the Weather

These items are especially necessary for winter driving, but we recommend keeping them in your car year-round to avoid getting caught without them:

  • Shovel: To clear snow if you’re stuck.
  • Ice Scraper and Snow Brush: To clear your windows.

Now that you’ve packed all these essential items, there’s one more thing your emergency kit needs. Don’t worry, it won’t take up any more space—it's a CAA membership! When you’re stranded without a way to get home, there’s nothing like seeing the friendly faces of our CAA Roadside Assistance team pulling up to save the day.

If you don’t want to pack your emergency roadside kit yourself, we’ve got you covered! CAA Stores have kits available for purchase in store or online. Visit our website to sign up for your membership or buy your kit and let us help you stay safe out there!
