5 Ways to Keep Your Family Safe and Covered This Fall

Written by CAA Saskatchewan | Sep 24, 2025 2:00:02 PM

The air is crisp, the leaves are changing, and school is back in full swing. But between soccer practice, pumpkin patches, and Halloween costumes, fall also brings safety considerations for your family.

CAA Insurance wants to help keep your family safe for this season and beyond. Check out the tips below to make sure you are on top of things for fall!

Get Your Home Fall Ready

If you face damage from fall storms, flooding from the rain, or any other issues, home insurance can save the day and keep you from breaking the bank on repairs. However, prepping now can help you to avoid making any claims!

  • Check your windows and doors for drafts before the cold arrives. A good way to test this is to place a candle nearby—if the flame flickers, there is a draft!
  • Clean your gutters to avoid any flooding from clogs caused by falling leaves.
  • Get your furnace inspected now so you know it’s working before the nights get too chilly.

Stay Safe on the Roads

With Auto Extension Coverage from CAA, you can have confidence on the road in any season, knowing you’re covered if accidents happen. How can you be more prepared for the unique issues fall brings?

  • Watch for wet leaves on the road or early frosts that could make things slippery.
  • Ensure your tires always have enough air—changes in temperature can affect tire pressure!
  • Do a check of your car emergency kit to make sure you have the supplies you’ll need for cold weather.

Fire Safety Indoors and Outdoors

Home insurance can cover fire damage, but prevention is key! To keep everyone safe and avoid disruptions to your life, make sure you are preparing your home and yard.

  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly.
  • Be cautious if you are using space heaters and fireplaces. Clean out your chimney seasonally to avoid any blockages, especially from falling leaves!
  • Keep the leaves and other debris away from outdoor appliances—once the snow comes, you don’t want to trap it all around them and create a larger mess for yourself.
  • Follow local guidelines if you want to have outdoor firepits.

Protect Your Health During Cold & Flu Season

When fall arrives, it is unfortunately the season of getting sick more often. Having solid health insurance in place is helpful in case you require medical intervention from an illness, but there are ways to help boost your immune system!

  • Get your flu shots as soon as they’re available.
  • Keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet. Get your Tylenol, Advil, and cold medicine now before pharmacies get low on stock as people get sick.
  • Wash your hands often. This is important every single day, not just during flu season!
  • Take your vitamins daily.

Make Seasonal Fun Safe

Finally, you’ll want to do everything you can to enjoy the season. After all, fall brings cozy activities, Halloween, corn mazes, pumpkin carving, and so much more! Make sure you are doing what you can to enjoy your time safely with the whole family.

  • Inspect your yard before hosting get-togethers. Remove any tripping hazards before you have kids running around!
  • Choose safe routes for trick-or-treating, and make sure you are easily visible while you’re walking. Try glow sticks or reflective gear!
  • If new sports or activities are starting, ensure the gear fits well and is in good condition for protection and comfort.
